Guerrilla cinema is having a bit of a moment. From classic sports movies projected on to a mountain of discarded fridges in a disused Olympic stadium, to New Yorkers watching scary flicks, tucked up in a mattress factory in NYC.
Now guerrilla cinema has come to Chengdu. Secret Cinema will be showing movies throughout the summer in unusual places to give some of your favourite films a little special flavor. Last year Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water was screened under the stars at a pool with half-time swimming.
After that, Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park was brought to the people of Chengdu in a truly prehistoric fashion, in a corten steel structure designed by Steven Holl.
So which film next?
To fend off the monsoon weather blues, we're showing eighties cult classic: Back To The Future. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox)'s life is a dump. His father, George (Crispin Glover), is constantly bullied by his supervisor Biff Tannen and his mother, Lorraine (Lea Thompson), is an overweight alcoholic. One day, Marty gets a call from his scientist friend Dr. "Doc" Emmet Brown telling Marty to meet him at Twin Pines Mall at 1:15 AM... the rest, is history...
Beyond its dazzling special effects, the best element of Back to the Future is the performance of Michael J. Fox, who finds himself in the quagmire of surviving the white-bread 1950s with a hip 1980s mindset. Back to the Future cemented the box-office bankability of both Fox and the film's director, Robert Zemeckis, who went on to helm two equally exhilarating sequels.
