Overview

Lifeline Shanghai believes that talking helps. Our helpline supports callers when they are facing life challenges. We know meaningful conversations with friends, family and work colleagues, can play a vital role in supporting someone for whom we are concerned about. It can all begin by simply asking "Are you ok?"

Objectives

Participants will recognise the life-changing power of caring conversations and learn skills to promote them. Learning what, how and when to ask someone who appears to be struggling, "Are you okay?", could possibly save a life but more commonly it can decrease feelings of disconnection and loneliness. These practical skills can be readily applied in both personal and professional situations.

Content Outline

This session will emphasize the importance of connecting caringly with others to help prevent suicide. Through discussion, demonstration and interaction, participants will be guided how to ask the question, "Are you ok?" and then how to listen empathetically and respond according to the other's need. The skills that will be taught can help those who are struggling to feel connected and supported. This training is based upon the Australian R U OK? campaign www.ruok.org.au .
