What is Compassionate Communication?
The US-American Psychologist Dr. Marshall Rosenberg (* 6 Oct. 1934, † 7 Feb 2015) developed a simple, yet powerful four step process based on three pillars to help people resolve conflicts and better connect with each other. He calls it Nonviolent Communication (NVC) or Compassionate Communication. It has been spread across the world since the 1980’s and the corresponding book “Non-violent communication” is available in many languages, also in Chinese (非暴力沟通).
The purpose of compassionate communication is to enable us to give one another from the heart by strengthening our connection through true empathy.
People applying this approach meet their needs much more effectively while avoiding or resolving conflicts e.g. with colleagues or direct reports at work, in relationships with partners or friends or between parents and children.
Communication is a basic human activity that is acquired throughout life but unfortunately not always in the most effective way. If we work on becoming more compassionate in our way of communicating with each other, our lives can be much more fulfilling and peaceful.
Compassionate Communication can save marriages, help parents raise their children in a more constructive way, and help schools as well as other institutions or companies to function better.
In summary Compassionate Communication helps building up a non-judgmental attitude of mutual respect that we theoretically all know is important but much too often fail to realize in practice.
This 1,5 hours workshop is designed for beginners to Compassionate Communication. The term "Compassionate Communication" is by the way an alternative expression for Marshall Rosenberg's "Non-Violent Communication" approach.
This is what participants can expect from this workshop:
- Understand & experience the four steps of the compassionate communication process including the differences between observation and interpretation, pure feelings and judgmental feelings, needs and strategies, requests and demands.
- Learn about the three pillars of compassionate communication
- Understand the importance of autonomy and attitude towards others as a pre-requisite to connect with others and enable giving from the heart.
- Get a glimpse of what differentiates compassionate communication from the way we typically communicate and why it is more effectively meeting our needs
- Understand that there is another approach that can be used to solve or mitigate (old) conflicts
- Get a taste on the philosophy behind compassionate communication
- Get inspired to learn and read more about this communication approach

About the Facilitator Tilman Rieger
8C-consulting has been founded by Tilman Rieger, former HR Director of General Motors Europe.
Tilman holds degrees in Personnel Management & Economy as well as a Master's in Educational Science, Psychology and Sociology. And he has over five years of experience in executive coaching, communication consulting and workshop facilitation. He strives to help his clients reach more effective communication using his expertise in psychology, leadership and corporate collaboration.
With nearly 15 years of HR leadership as well as 5 years of consulting & coaching experience, Tilman founded 8C Consulting.
He invested over 800 class room training hours in business coaching, compassionate communication and business mediation.
Today, Tilman passionately designs, conducts, and facilitates leadership training and workshops for both managers and associates across different business fields and cultural backgrounds. He also works as a certified executive coach, with particular expertise in transactional analysis, compassionate communication and cross-cultural management.
He is the President of the Shanghai Coaching Circle, and in the executive committee of China’s strongest public speaking club: Shanghai Leadership Toastmasters Club.
He is of German and U.S. nationality, and has lived in Chicago, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Madrid, Zürich and now Shanghai. He is fluent in German, English, Spanish, and conversational in French and Mandarin.

After having registered you will receive a wechat friend request from Tilman Rieger. Please accept this. Then a group chat with all participants will be created and you will all receive the Zoom link accordingly. In case you have not yet used zoom before please click the link already 30 min before the workshop starts in order to have sufficient time to install the Zoom App on your computer or mobile device.
Please also make sure that your computer or mobile phone is on a stand or placed on a table so that you don't have to hold it in your hand for 2 hours. Not only this is less tiring for you but also it is a bit unpleasant for others to see your video frame moving all the time. Please also make sure that you turn on your video because we want this session to be as close as possible to a real session. Only if everyone shows their face and does not hide behind a black screen we can create sufficient emotional safety for everyone. Please also make sure that you don't have too much background noise.
